Sheriff looks to earn back public's trust after 5 deputies arrested

Brooksville, Florida -- Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis has seen five of its own deputies arrested in the last six weeks and he says he's furious and disappointed in the deputies he trusted to not only uphold the law but obey it as well.

"I am so angry I could bite a nail in two sometimes," said Sheriff Nienhuis. "I am so disappointed in all of them because they took an oath with me. I am going to reconsider recommitting my deputies to their oath and I am planning to review our training."

Hernando Co. deputy arrested for battery on accident victim

Spring Hill, Florida -- The Hernando County Sheriff's Office says a patrol deputy has been arrested after alleged inappropriate conduct with a traffic accident victim.

Deputy William Martinez was reportedly backing up the Florida Highway Patrol during a single vehicle accident on Deltona Blvd. and Founder Road on Jan. 23 when the incident happened.

According to witness statements, once the FHP trooper completed the accident investigation, Deputy Martinez gave the accident victim a ride home.

Man accidentally fires gun at Town N' Country ER

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Deputies say a man accidentally fired a handgun while he was being treated for a medical issue at a hospital emergency room.

The 67-year-old Tampa man arrived at Town & Country Hospital around 1:20 a.m. Friday.

The Tampa Tribune reports that after being placed in a bed, the man removed a Glock 36 from his back pocket and took out the magazine. Deputies say that as he tried to clear the chamber his finger accidentally pulled the trigger.

Hernando county restaurant burns down overnight

Brooksville, FL-- Hernando County Fire Rescue responded to a commercial fire at Papa Joe's Italian Restaurant located at 6244 Spring Lake Hwy Friday morning.

It happened around 3am.  Crews worked hard salvage what they could but the Restaurant is a complete loss.

Countless memories have been created at Papa Joe's Italian Restaurant.  Families have been dining at Papa Joe's for more than 30 years. 

Owners Joseph and Donna Giarratana got that dreaded phone call that no business owner ever wants to get.

Hernando detectives arrest man for credit card mail theft

Hernando County, Florida -- A man has been arrested for stealing bank account information from mailboxes.

Indalesio "Indy" Basaldua, began his fraud by stealing a credit card from Tammy Tolbert's mailbox. Tolbert ordered a new Chase credit card back in December although she never received it. 

Detectives determined that the card was stolen from the mailbox, and six fraudulent transactions were made with the card totaling in $409.04.  

Video surveillance from four of the six transactions showed Basaldua using the stolen credit card.

Hernando deputy fired after being arrested for child abuse

Hernando County, Florida -- A Hernando County Deputy has been terminated after burning a child with a hair dryer.

Deputy Cody Marrone was arrested on January 17, after burning a 3-year-old boy with a hair dryer because the child would not let him sleep.
