Artist Paige Hernandez visits community, thanks to Straz Center

Paige Hernandez - a multifaceted artist known for her innovative fusion of poetry, hip hop, dance and education – is experiencing Tampa this week and we are experiencing her unique blend of artistry. She is here for an artist residency at the Straz Center’s Patel Conservatory, which has her visiting schools, homeless shelters and Patel Conservatory students, among others.

On Tuesday, she conducted a hip-hop dance workshop at Metropolitan Ministries. Wednesday, she was at Roland Park School and Positive Spin. Thursday, she will be at the CDC of Tampa//East Tampa Prodigy leading a "Rap, Clap, Write That," workshop. The next day, she’ll head over to Orange Grove Middle School before later going to FICS.

She won’t get a break on the weekend, as she’ll visit students in class at the Patel Conservatory on Saturday, and Sunday, will perform at the Blake Heritage Festival at the Straz Center. Finally, before she leaves us, on Sunday, she’ll appear at the TOBA Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast downtown at 6:30 a.m.

The Straz Center is known for bringing artists into the community; it’s an important part of this incredible arts organization’s mission. Earlier this week, the Straz brought in New Directions Veterans Choir for appearances and workshops with St. Peter Claver Catholic School and Bay Pines Veterans Hospital and an onstage concert for the public. Most of the singers in this a Capella group are former veterans who after returning from service, found themselves homeless at one point or another. Now, they’ve all turned to a new direction and have performed nationally and even on NBC’s America’s Got Talent.

New classes in dance, music and theater started this week at the Patel Conservatory and it isn’t too late to register. If you get in by this weekend, you might get to see Paige Hernandez in your classroom! More info at www.patelconservatory.org and by calling 813-222-1002.
