Tampa, Florida -- Hundreds of high school performers are in Tampa from around the state to participate in the Florida Thespian Festival at the Straz Center downtown!

Broadway performer Quentin Darrington, (Ragtime) is here at the Festival helping to select the winner of the David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Art’s Broadway Stars of the Future Awards. Patel Conservatory Theater Chair Ami Sallee also will judge the contest. Two winners will be chosen to go to New York to compete for scholarship money in the national Jimmy Awards competition.

Darrington will be back this summer to teach at the Patel Conservatory. He will work with casts of A Straz Musical Revue, Little Shop of Horrors, Disney’sThe Little Mermaid, Jr. and Shakespeare’s The Tempest.

National performing artist and writer and playwright Doug Cooney, author of the popular The Beloved Dearly, will also be here to teach summer programs at the Conservatory. He will help students develop the storyline for A Straz Musical Revue and develop acting skills and will work with the cast of Adult Acting Project.

Placement auditions for A Straz Musical Revue, Little Shop of Horrors, Disney’sThe Little Mermaid, Jr. and Shakespeare’s The Tempest will be held Saturday, April 27 at 1 p.m. and Saturday, June 1 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Patel Conservatory. This year, dormitory options are available for older students who would like to come from out of state.
