Special Olympics torch passing through Hernando Co. | Community Spirit
Hernando County, Florida -- Law enforcement officers from over 300 Florida agencies are participating in the state-wide torch run to benefit the athletes of Special Olympics Florida.
The Hernando County Sheriff's Office will once again have the opportunity to participate in the torch run on April 9 at 9 a.m. beginning at Killingsworth Plaza in Brooksvile. Participants will follow a predetermines route that will end on the front steps of the Hernando County Courthouse.
The run is free of charge, but participants are required to sign a waiver of liability which will be available onsite the day of the run.
Each year over 5,000 officers carry the torch in a 1,500-mile relay through more than 60 counties in Florida. Funds are generated through contributions from individuals and businesses along the way and through sales of the popular Torch Run T-shirts and hats.
The interstate torch relay will begin at the end of March and culminate with the Opening Ceremonies on May 18, 2012. Officers fron around the state will join together to bring the Flam of Hope into the stadium.
