Hillsborough Public Library to give books to local schools

Hillsborough Co., FL-- The Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library will give new books to some of Hillsborough County’s school children through the Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) program.

Two book distributions are scheduled. The first is on Dec. 13 at Sulphur Springs Elementary School, and the second is on Dec. 14 at James Elementary School. All the books purchased are science related, and targeted for third and fourth graders. The children will be able to keep these books as a part of this book ownership initiative.

The library system bought new children’s books for this effort with a Macy’s grant of $2,794, through RIF. Since 2004, Macy’s has helped raise $25.8 million for RIF to help children gain access to books.

“We’re thrilled to take this opportunity to extend the joy of reading and love of books beyond our libraries’ walls in partnership with local schools,” said Joe Stines, Hillsborough County’s Library Services Director.  “Our goal here is to promote literacy, encourage reading, and reach out to children who don't have as much opportunity to select and own high-quality books.”
