Tampa, Florida-- Two fortunate and talented Florida high school students were recently awarded the David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts’ Broadway Stars of the Future Award.

Chandler Morehead and Tim Hart will have the chance to compete this June in the National High School Musical Theater Awards, named after Chairman of the Nederlander Organization, James Nederlander.

“The Straz Center for the Performing Arts is known for community service and its commitment to helping talented youth strive and thrive in the world of performing arts. Sponsoring this contest and enabling these students to compete in New York is just one way we demonstrate this commitment,” says Wendy Leigh, vice president of education at the Straz Center.

Morehead, of Sunrise, is a student at American Heritage School. During the competition, she portrayed Meredith Parker in Bat Boy: the Musical. Hart, a student of Palm Harbor University High School, is a Clearwater resident and portrayed the Baker from Into The Woods.

The competition and presentations were held at the Florida Thespian Festival at the Straz Center.

Judging the competition were: Straz Center Trustee Don Jones, Patel Conservatory Theater Department Chair Ami Sallee, Marty Hancock, Patel Conservatory Theater Department Manager Christen Petitt, Sandra Cockrell and Broadway performer Quentin Darrington.

Judges noted that they were impressed with Hart’s and Morehead’s singing, acting and their commitment to their characters and believed they showed the most potential for being successful on Broadway one day.
