Hernando County, Florida-- Sheriff Al Nienhuis has announced a new Hernando County Sheriff's Office plan for pinching those tax-payer pennies!

According to Sheriff Nienhuis, inmates from the Hernando County Detention Center will now be responsible for the landscaping and grounds maintenance at both the Hernando County Sheriff's Office and the Hernando County Detention Center.

Grounds maintenance at these locations was formerly under county contract and handled by Hernando County, but the contract included numerous other county-owned properties in need of a great deal of care and attention.

The sheriff says many benefits will bud from the change as it saves taxpayer dollars, maintains the appearance of the sheriff''s office and detention center, and gives inmates something to be proud of.

"Professionally maintaining the grounds gives our inmates the sense of satisfaction that only comes from a job well done," said Nienhuis. "This feeling of accomplishment will, hopefully, encourage them to become productive contributors to our community once they resolve their current charges."

With the inmates performing grounds maintenance, both properties with be cared for on a regular schedule, ensuring a consistently professional appearance.
