South Tampa Walgreens customers raise money for Moffitt | Community Spirit
Customers of South Tampa Walgreens and other stores around the Tampa Bay area came together to raise $223,000 for the Moffitt Cancer Center.
Walgreens customers bought $1 and $5 "Make A Difference" circles in stores to benefit diversity research programs at Moffitt. The campaign took place in nearly 300 stores throughout the West Coast of Florida and in south Georgia during June.
"We (Moffitt Diversity) were losing some of our funding for a couple of outreach programs for certain communities. We were going to have to cut programs," B. Lee Green, Ph.D., the vice president of Moffitt Diversity said in a release. "When I shared that story with the executives at Walgreens, the first thing out of their mouths was 'We can help you with that'. So, we went from thinking we weren't going to have enough funding to having an abundance of funding where we could actually triple the amount of work we do in the community because of this partnership."
"When we come together for our patients, we all win," William S. Dalton, Ph.D., M.D., the president and CEO of Moffitt said in a release. "When you have such a fabulous partner for a successful campaign, you want to do it again. On behalf of all our patients, we cannot thank you enough," he told the more than 50 Walgreens store managers and district leaders who attended the luncheon.
According to the Moffitt Cancer Center, programs that benefitted from the partnership are a part of M-POWER (Moffitt Program for Outreach Wellness Education & Resources).
