Man charged in 'shattered window bandit' robberies | Crime
Tampa, Florida -- The U.S. State Attorney's Office has charged a man in connection with a slew of armed robberies at fast food restaurants spanning three counties.
Investigators say DNA evidence recovered at the scene of one of the robberies on Sept. 23 at a Papa John's restaurant on Gunn Highway matched that of 28-year-old Demetrius Bowers.
In all, eight fast food restaurants were robbed by a man armed with a semi-automatic handgun in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Hernando counties between Sept. 23 and Nov. 4. During each of the robberies, the suspect wore a black ski mask and used a concrete block to shatter the restaurants' window, dubbing him the "Shattered Window Bandit".
Further investigation into the other robberies places Bowers at the scene. If convicted, Bowers faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 57 years in prison on the firearm charges and a maximum sentence of 20 years for each robbery.
