Which crimes occur near you? Here's how to know in Hernando...

Hernando County, Florida-- Sheriff Al Nienhuis wants to remind Hernando residents of an interactive online mapping tool that keeps communities updated on local crime.

According to the sheriff, the program utilizes Google Maps to pinpoint what types of crimes have been reported where, so as to keep citizens safe, alert and informed of what's happening near them...and that's day-in and day-out! Sheriff Nienhuis says crime information for all of unincorporated Hernando County is updated daily by 6 a.m.

If you'd rather not check the site each day, officials say residents also have the option of receiving notifications on recent crimes in a specified area.

Though the program has been available since 2008, officials released some refreshers for residents interested in using it:

How to Access it:

Q&A:

  • Q: Will all crimes be on the map?
  • A: No. Officials say because of exemptions under the Florida Public Records Law, crimes of child abuse, sexual assault, exploitation of the elderly and stalking will not appear on the map.
  • Q: Is their a charge for using the map?
  • A: No. According to the release, the monthly program fee of $250 is paid with Law Enforcement Trust Funds: "Essentially, that means that criminals are paying to catch criminals..."
