Attorney brings concealed weapon to courthouse

Brooksville, Florida -- As numerous people were filing into the Hernando County Courthouse on Monday morning, two alert Customs Protection Officers (CPO) observed a firearm in an attorney's briefcase as it passed through the metal detector.

Deputies were then called to the courthouse to investigate. During questioning, the unidentified attorney told deputies he had put the firearm in his briefcase on the previous Friday when repairs were being done to his vehicle and had forgotten to take it out.

18-year-old arrested for Hernando library arson

Brooksville, Florida -- Hernando deputies say a wanna-be firefighter is responsible for starting a fire at the East Hernando Branch Library earlier this month.

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office, working closely with the State Fire Marshal's Office, arrested 18-year-old Joseph Brannen over the weekend for the for allegedly starting the July 6 fire.

Burglars steal $10,000 in camera equipment

Tampa, Florida -- Tampa Police officers are asking for the public's help identifying two men who stole $10,000 in camera equipment from a Carrollwood area photography shop Saturday night.

Police say around 7:50 p.m., the men smashed a hole in a concrete block wall behind North Tampa Photography on Busch Boulevard, which activated the security alarm. They then went inside with a large garbage can they used to steal various cameras and supplies.

Cash for Batteries store raided, manager arrested

Tampa, Florida -- A Cash for Batteries store on Nebraska Avenue was raided by Tampa Police detectives Tuesday for buying known stolen batteries.

Detectives say since they launched the investigation four months ago the unlicensed business had been circumventing the law by buying more than 50 tons of batteries with no questions asked.

Suspects sought in movie theatre fire prank

Brooksville, Florida -- The Hernando County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help identifying those responsible for tampering with numerous fire suppression devices at a Brooksville theater Saturday night.

On July 13, around 11:45 p.m., deputies say theaters #1 and #4 of Beacon Theaters were relatively crowded at Beacon Theaters for the final showings when the fire alarm sounded. At the same time, the suspects removed the fire extinguishers from their cases and activated them inside the crowded theaters while the sprinklers in the hallway were tripped.

3 arrested in Brooksville during warrant round up

Brooksville, Florida -- Three criminals are off the streets in Hernando County after the sheriff's office conducted an early morning, impromptu warrant round up.

Deputies checked several locations for the individuals and were finally able to "pin" them down to a home on Mocking Wren Road in Brooksville.

When they got to the home, the homeowner gave deputies permission to go inside to find the wanted men.

4 arrested in drug house bust

Brooksville, Florida -- During the search of a Brooksville home on July 2, four people were arrested and numerous illegal narcotics and various items of drug paraphernalia were seized.

In all, four people -- Stephanie Cheek, 27; William Rogers, 35; Jonathan Peck, 35; and David Pittman, 28 -- were arrested on various drug possession charges.
