Work with Broadway pros at the Patel Conservatory

Tampa, Florida -- Local up and coming actors will have a terrific chance to work with Broadway and television professionals this summer at the Straz Center’s Patel Conservatory. Auditions will be held for the summer intensives “Little Shop of Horrors” and “A Straz Center Revue” this Saturday (May 18) beginning at 1 p.m. Auditions will be held at the Patel Conservatory at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts.

“Little Shop of Horrors” will be choreographed by Michelle Elkin, choreographer of ABC’s “Baby Daddy” TV show. Elkin got her start in the movie “Annie” when she was just eight years old and she’s been dancing ever since. She’s also choreographed for "Marvin, Marvin" on Nickelodeon and "Boston Legal." She was also recently the assistant choreographer to Marguerite Derricks on the ABC show “Bunheads” and served as associate choreographer to Marguerite for the Broadway show, “Wonderland,” that originated at the Straz Center in Tampa.

“My hope is that when these young artists are finished with this experience, they will have taken a new step on their journey in the arts and have learned something about themselves,” Elkin says. “I feel like every show is like a Broadway show. We will play with characters, musicality and storytelling through dance.”

“Little Shop of Horrors” runs July 1-20, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays for students in grades 9-college.

Says Elkin,“I look forward to returning to Tampa, seeing old friends and creating new bonds of friendship. I believe we will all learn something new along the way to continue our journey with.”

Quentin Darrington, star of the Broadway touring production of “Ragtime Revival,” and Doug Cooney, national performing artist and author of “The Beloved Dearly,” will provide acting coaching for students in “A Straz Musical Revue.” Running June 17-28, "A Straz Musical Revue" is open to young performers in grades five through college. Students will polish their solo and group musical theater skills and will research, rehearse and perform songs from the Straz Center's 2013-2014 season.

Darrington will also coach participants in “Little Shop of Horrors.”

The Patel Conservatory is offering a dormitory option for summer theater intensive students in grades five and up, allowing those who live outside the area the chance to participate. The conservatory offers dozens of summer camps and classes in not just theater, but also music and dance.
