Volunteer, beautify parks during National Public Lands Day

The 20th Anniversary of National Public Lands Day falls on Saturday, Sept. 28th, and locals of all ages are invited to celebrate by volunteering at a park near them. 

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Florida Park Service, the Friends of Florida State Parks and Governor Rick Scott announced a variety of activities taking place at more than 70 of Florida's award-winning state parks- a few of which are right here in West Central Florida.

Hillsborough County, Florida -- Unlock Hillsborough County’s natural treasures by participating in the 2014 Environmental Lands Acquisition and Protection Program’s (ELAPP) Calendar Photo Contest.

The photos should be something that highlights the Hillsborough County’s ELAPP sites. All photographers both amateurs and professionals, are invited to submit photos.

Tampa to start pilot program for Downtown Trash pickup

Tampa, Florida--The city of Tampa is starting a new pilot program in conjunction with the Downtown Partnership to make the city more visually pleasing in regards to trash removal.

Starting July 1st  the 95 gallon  blue carts used for garbage removal in Downtown will be replaced by 30 gallon  blue bags that merchants will purchase from the city. The merchants will be charged on what the city calls a "pay as you throw system."  The city maintains the cost will be minimal to merchants.

If so, you won't want to miss the upcoming "Landscaping dos and don'ts" class, in which Sylvia Durell of the Hernando County Florida-Friendly Landscaping Program will share her wisdom on the best ways for the windy-season.

According to Durell, attendees will receive tips on how to prepare their landscapes for hurricanes or severe storms, and advice on how to keep potential pollutants from being washed into your landscape.
