Health advisory for 3 Tampa area beaches

Tampa, FL -- The Hillsborough County Health Dept. has issued a health advisory for Picnic Island Beach, Bahia Beach and Davis Island Beach after samples came back with high levels of enterococci bacteria.

These levels are considered a potential health risk to the public.

The presence of bacteria is an indication of fecal pollution, which may come from storm water runoff, pets and wildlife, and human sewage.

The samples were taken on Sept. 6 and will be re-sampled on Sept. 12.

The Hillsborough County Health Dept. conducts coastal beach water quality checks at nine sites weekly through the Healthy Beaches Monitoring Program.

You can review beach water sampling results for reporting counties at the Dept. of Health's Internet Beach Water Quality website.
