Learn Florida Friendly Landscaping techniques from home

Hernando County, Florida-- Hernando County Utilities and Hernando County Government Broadcasting have collaborated to produce five informational videos to help homeowners maintain their landscapes. 

According to a recent release, the videos follow Florida Friendly Landscaping principles, and teach the proper use a rain barrel to conserve water, proper lawn fertilization and irrigation and provide information on the "Forever Green Project", completed by local Girl Scout Troop #807.

Tampa, Florida-- TECO announces a new Neighborhood Weatherization Program intended to help low-income families save energy and money.

TECO says they have created the, "innovative new program to install energy-saving items in thousands of low-income homes at no cost to homeowners," and that utilizing the measures could save residents, " more than $100 a year."

Learn to set-up and use a rain barrel, possible break on water-bill

Hernando County, Florida -- Hernando County residents could be eligible for credit on their water bills for attending "Contain the Rain - A Rain Barrel Workshop."

According to a press release, the workshop will be presented by John Korycki of the Hernando County Florida Yards & Neighborhoods Program.

It will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, June 25, at the Hernando County Utilities Department, 21030 Cortez Blvd. in Brookesville.

Each participant will receive a completed rain barrel, along with instructions on its proper use and set-up.

Carrollwood, Florida -- North Tampa residents can get information about sinkholes at a forum in Northdale on June 26.

Experts will be available to talk about insurance claines, testing, identifying and repairing sinkholes.

The discussion will take place at The Northdale Recreation Center at 15550 Spring Pine Drive.

Sebring, Florida-- A Highlands County man was charged with damaging state lands along the northwest shore of Lake Jackson in Sebring by using a tractor to clear and till a quarter-mile-long, 100-yard-wide swath of lake bottom.

Weeki Wachee, Florida -- The Hurricane and Safety Expo was huge success this past Saturday with over 2,100 residents in attendance at Weeki-Wachee Springs State Park, according to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office.

The expo featured presentations on flood maps, wildfire preparedness, identity theft and generator safety.

Prepare for a busy mosquito season

Hernando County, FL -- The Mosquito Control Manager for Hernando County wants to remind all residents to check their homes, lawns and gardens to make sure they are not creating mosquito-breeding sources.

They suggest you take a look around your yard and dump out any standing water that has collected in flower pots, toys, lawn furniture or any item that holds water, including ornamental plants. Mosquitoes only need a quarter-inch of water to breed.
