Be aware of wildfire and drought conditions

Hernando County -- April 16-20 is Wildfire Awareness Week across the State of Florida.

The Florida Division of Forestry together with Hernando County Fire Rescue want residents and visitors to know that the wildfire threat within the county is currently very high as the county approaches a severe drought status.

County Code Enforcement’s Operation Fight The Blight Is Big Success At Mid-way Point

Brandon, Florida--Hillsborough County Code Enforcement kicked off its 30-day Operation Fight the Blight: Orient Park cleanup campaign on April 2. Now at the mid-way point, officers have collected 600 cubic yards of trash, debris and junk from the Orient Park area.

Boundaries for the sweep reach from N. 62nd Street east to N. 76th Street and from Columbus Drive north to Martin Luther King Boulevard. Several dumpsters are located at 3100 N. 66th St. in Tampa for residents to drop off trash, debris and other items.

Aqua Utilities Florida improves Highlands' water quality

Highlands County, Florida- On April 10, Aqua Utilities Florida Inc. announced that they recently completed the installation of new treatment systems and upgrades designed to improve water service in Lake Josephine and Sebring Lakes.

The new treatment  systems will boost water pressure and improve the various qualities of customers’ drinking water, such as the way it looks, smells and tastes.

Sebring, Florida -- Come out Saturday, April 14, for the Night Sky Astronomy presentation at Highlands Hammock State Park at 7:30 p.m.

Local Astronomer Chris Stephan, member of Highlands Stargazers, will present a program on the night sky outside in the park's picnic area.

Bring lawn chairs or blankets and relax under the stars.  Telescopes will be available for public use following the program.

Refreshments will be sold by the Friends of Highlands Hammock.

Fees: $5 per person, accompanied children age 15 and under admitted free.

UPDATE: 6 homes threatened in Sebring wildfire

Sebring, Florida -- UPDATE: A wildfire that threatened six homes Wednesday afternoon has been contained. However, the Florida Forest Service has issued a warning to nearby residents with breathing issues, since there will be smoke in the area.

Residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed and if possible spend the night at a friend or relative's away from the Orange Blossom Estates area. Glowing and smoldering debris may be visible overnight. Drivers should avoid the area.

Beach advisory lifted for Pine Island

Beach advisory lifted for Pine Island

Brooksville, Florida -- Just in time for the weekend, the Hernando County Health Department has lifted the beach advisory for Pine Island Beach.

The advisory was issued back on March 19 after bacteriological tests revealed the water quality was in poor range. 

The county health department received the updated results today showing the water quality has improved opening the beach to swimmers.
