Hillsborough County offers Benefits CheckUp for older adults

Hillsborough County, Florida -- Are you a senior who is having trouble paying for medical care, property taxes, or food? If so, you should visit one of Hillsborough County’s Senior Centers for a free Benefits CheckUp to see if you qualify for assistance

The Benefits CheckUp program, developed by the National Council on Aging, will allow the County’s Aging Services Division to better assist older adults with finding available resources.  This service is the nation’s most comprehensive web-based service to screen for benefits programs for older adults with limited income and resources. The Benefits CheckUp looks at federal, state and local programs that may help older adults live a better life with financial help.

Sixty percent of older adults aged 55 and older have not enrolled in benefits for which they qualify. Over the years, Benefits CheckUp has helped more than 3.4 million older adults find more than $2.9 billion worth of benefits.

Without these benefits, millions of older adults are forced to make the choice between buying groceries or filling subscriptions; or putting food on the table or paying utility bills. The Benefits CheckUp can help with prescription drugs, energy assistance, housing, transportation and legal services.

Senior can call their local Hillsborough County Senior Center to set up an appointment to have their benefits checked. A complete list of Senior Center is available on the Aging Services website.

Aging Services offers a variety of activities for older adults age 50 and over.  The division has more than 20 congregate dining sites and eight senior centers that can provide a hot nutritious noon time meal for those over the age of 60. Seniors can register for activities or meal services by visiting their local center.  Visit the Aging Services website to view activity calendars and the locations of the sites.
