College honors student nurses

Avon Park, FL -- South Florida Community College's Nursing Education Department honored students in all nursing programs during a weeklong Nursing Student Week, Feb. 20- 26.


Nursing Student Week was established to distinguish the dedication and enthusiasm of Florida's nursing students.


This year's theme, "Bright Minds Fueling a Bright Future: The Future Nursing is in our Hands", acknowledges the hard work of student nurses and the impact they will have on the image of nursing for the rest of their careers.

Possible comtamination of wells in Lake Placid area

Lake Placid, FL -- The Highlands County Health Department has received notification that the pesticide Aldicarb was misapplied to a citrus grove near the intersection of Cloverleaf Road and Pine Ridge Drive.

This pesticide is not supposed to be used near private drinking water wells.

Most homes near the grove are served by city water, but some homes obtain water from private drinking water wells.

Jail to add medical facility

Jail to add medical facility

Hernando County, Florida -- The Board of County Commissioners recently authorized staff to obtain architectural design/build quotes for a 6,000 square foot standalone medical facility at the Hernando County Jail.

The new medical unit will resolve the inadequacies and problems of the existing medical unit and potentially generate revenue through securing federal inmates.

The current medical unit space will be re-purposed for juvenile housing, and that work will be done by the County’s Facilities staff.

The Board also authorized staff to proceed with soliciting bids for necessary repairs at the Jail at a cost not to exceed $155,000.
