$6.5 million upgrade at Oak Hill Hospital

Brooksville, FL -- Oak Hill Hospital in Brooksville recently spent $6.5 million on a new cardiovascular section of the hospital.


The hospital purchased 16 new beds, state-of-the-art equipment and many other items with the money, according to marketing manager Richard Linkul. 


It's the first phase of upgrades for the hospital, Linkul said.


Oak Hill Hospital is located at 11,375 Cortez Boulevard in Brooksville.

Deputies collecting prescriptions in Brooksville

Brooksville, FL -- Today, Hernando County Sheriff's deputies and Brooksville Police officers will be collecting prescription drugs in Brooksville as part of Operation Medicine Cabinet.

The program provides residents a chance to bring unused, unwanted or expired prescriptions, controlled substances and over-the-counter medications for safe disposal, according to Sgt. Donna Black of the Hernando County Sheriff's Office.

The event takes places Thursday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Carter Chiropractic & Wellness Center, which is located on 1188 South Broad Street in Brooksville.  It's next to Pizza Hut and Brewers Funeral Home.

The event is a collaborative effort between the Hernando County Sheriff's Office and Brooksville Police Department.

South Tampa stores to unveil new products with "cracking" debut Saturday

Tampa, Florida -- Publix Supermarkets in South Tampa will roll out a new line of specialty foods with a "cracking" debut showing off centuries-old skills today.

Workers in the deli at the Publix GreenWise Market at Azeele St. and Armenia Ave. will divide up a giant 75-pound wheel of cheese during a "wheel cracking" event at noon.

Shoppers can watch workers create the huge hunks of Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese from the wheel, and experience "the centuries-old art of cheese wheel cracking, a slow and gradual process, and experience the aroma and taste of this delicious cheese," Publix spokeswoman Shannon Patten said.

Local households relying on food stamps are on the rise

Highlands County, Florida -- According to new data released by the Department of Children and Families, more than 20% of households in Highlands County were using government assistance in January of this year.

The statistics show that 8,232 homes needed food stamps last month, only a slight decrease from the month before. On the whole, the numbers are on the rise. Last year, more than $20 million in benefits were given to the county, and many of the recipients were senior citizens.

Sheriff's Office looking for emergency volunteers

Hernando County, Florida -- The Hernando County Sheriff's Office Emergency Management is looking for individuals over 18 that are interested in joining the Hernando County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), and are encouraging interested volunteers to register for training now.

CERT volunteers receive special training which enhances their ability to prepare for, respond to, and recover from a disaster situation. As an organized team, they provide vital services in the absence of emergency responders, whose arrival may be delayed due to the scope and severity of the situation.

The next training class will begin on March 7, 2011.  Classes will be held from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. every Monday night through April 18 at the Emergency Operations Center, 18900 Cortez Blvd., Brooksville, FL.

Brooksville surgery center offers new referral service

Brooksville, FL -- Thursday, a ribbon cutting is planned at All Saint's Surgery Center in Brooksville to celebrate a new surgeon's referral phone line.


The surgery center is located at 11377 Cortez Blvd., next to Oak Hill Hospital.


The center is not new. Rather, the ribbon cutting is in celebration of a new surgeon's referral phone line, in which nurses help patients determine the surgeon who best suits them.


The new referral phone line is 855-REFER-ME, or 855-733-3763.

Doctor's Walk-In Clinic sign reveals new name

Brandon, FL -- The transition is complete. Starting today, the signs at the Doctor's Walk-In Clinic on Brandon Boulevard will show the new name MedExpress Urgent Care. 


The Brandon clinic is one of several in the Bay Area getting new signs this week.


The official unveiling will be at 1 p.m. today.


MedExpress Urgent Care is open 12 hours per day, seven days a week. They say they have a physician on duty at all times.
