Hernando Co. increases school law enforcement presence after CT shooting

Hernando Co., FL-- The Hernando County Sheriff's Office announced Monday that the "heartbreaking events that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School" last Friday have inspired them to fine-tune their School Security Operations Plan.

There will now be an increased law enforcement officer presence at both public and private schools in the county.

Below is the full release sent out regarding the changes:

We at the Hernando County Sheriff's Office were equally horrified by the heartbreaking events that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School.  Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to the victims, the families, and all of the citizens of Newtown, CT.

Throughout the weekend, Sheriff's Office personnel and school officials have been fine tuning our School Security Operations Plan for Hernando County.  We can assure you that the safety and security of our school population is paramount.  As of this morning we have assigned additional personnel to our school properties, to include private schools.  The active Operations Plan includes the use of marked and unmarked patrol vehicles in addition to other assets of the Sheriff's Office.

In light of recent and tragic national events, staff from the Hernando County Sheriff's Office has responded to requests from the Superintendent of Schools for Hernando County, as well as from concerned parents of school-aged children. Members of the Sheriff's Office met over the weekend and finalized operational plans to address safety, security, and the well-being of children and staff at county schools. Private schools were also included in the preparations. The plan was implemented on Monday, December 17, and will continue through an undisclosed period of time. Sheriff's Office personnel have been assigned to provide law enforcement services and security, as necessary, to protect against potential and real threats.

Parents, teachers, and students can rest assured that the Hernando County Sheriff's Office consistently places the highest priority on the safety and security of our children.  We will continue to do whatever is necessary to secure the safety of the children in any school in Hernando County.
