Gun buy back program brings in rocket launchers! | News
HILLSBOROUGH CO., Florida - An overwhelming number of people have responded to Operation Gun Swap, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. So overwhelming, in fact, two people turned in rocket launchers!
At every one of the county's five locations, there were lines of cars to get into the event, the sheriff's office says. Once inside, lines of people waited to swap their guns for $75 and game tickets.
A Hillsborough County sheriff's spokesperson says the response has been so robust, cash and ticket supplies depleted, so deputies distributed vouchers. The vouchers guarantee the same $75 and the same game tickets.
Those with vouchers can exchange them next Saturday, February 9 at the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Ybor City Operations Center, 2008 E. 8th Ave.
Deputies collected a total of 2,541 firearms during the event, including at least 11 stolen guns and hundreds of illegal weapons.
Someone also turned in a rocket launcher at the Dover area location, the sheriff's office says. Once it was dropped off, Hillsborough County bomb technicians inspected it and determined it was unloaded.
Shortly after the first rocket launcher was turned in, a second one was turned in at the Progress Village substation location within the last 30 minutes. It was also not loaded.
