Ederly woman's eye gouged out by deer trying to mate

Spring Hill, Florida - A 75-year-old woman, Sylvia Fernandez, is in the hospital in serious condition after a deer punctured her eye on Friday morning around 8:00 a.m.

It happened at the Survival Outreach Sanctuary on Bowman Road in Spring Hill.

10 News cameras were rolling when we first came into contact with the dangerous deer last week during an attempted escape by a local lion. The lion dug out of its enclosure and was loose on the property.

Now, it's this deer making headlines and causing chaos.

"Now, we have a woman missing her eye and I don't know, somehow I still have feelings somewhere inside of me that I am responsible for it," said Vernon Yates.

Yates is a well-known wildlife expert who says he knew something bad was going to happen when he saw the deer last week.

"I just looked at it and said, it's Russian Roulette here. You just know it's a matter of time before someone is going to get hurt by the deer, and they're not doing any precautions to stop it," he told 10 News.

That's precisely why Yates offered to cut the deer's antlers, but the sanctuary owner, Judy Watson, refused. Yates explained this is mating season and that deer are fighting for dominance, playing aggressively and people should not approach them.

"All the bucks have on their mind right now is wrestling with each other and breeding," Yates warned.

Yates told us he is taking possession of the deer at 1:00 p.m. Monday afternoon and the animal will most likely end up a in a zoo. Meanwhile, he says the animal sanctuary needs to take a long look at it's safety procedures.

In fact, FWC is currently investigating the case and the sanctuary owner could face charges. She has already been charged with a misdemeanor in the case of the lion that got loose.
