Truck hits, kills Middleton High School student

Tampa, Florida -- Tampa Police say a student from Middleton High School was hit and killed by a pickup truck Wednesday morning.

The accident happened at East Hillsborough Avenue and the railroad tracks between 22nd Street and 30th Street shortly after 6:30 a.m.

Police say 15-year-old Shenika Davis was walking south when the driver of a 1993 GMC Sierra hit her.

Investigators say Davis was wearing dark clothing and the driver did not see her. She died at the scene.

"It's a shock to me.  She just didn't walk the right way I guess," said her grandmother, Bernice Jackson.

A freshman at Middleton, family members say they were planning a big party for Davis on her 16th birthday next week.

"She took care of her sisters over there, her little sister, Lexi, she took care of all of them and she always did things for her mom and dad.  She was a sweet girl," said family friend Lillian Stallings.

Younger sister Jessica Davis says the two were not walking together on Wednesday, but Shenika always tried to get her to take that same shortcut along the train tracks.

Jessica, though, refused to go with her.

"Every morning it would be dark down there and it's scary," she explained.

Police are continuing to investigate, but say the driver will not be cited for the accident.

Davis is the oldest of four sisters.

A Hillsborough County schools crisis team was at Middleton High on Wednesday and grief counselors say they will be back on Thursday if needed.
