Seminole Heights businesses burn up in fire

Tampa, Florida -- Tampa Fire investigators say they have determined the cause of a fire that destroyed two Seminole Heights businesses overnight.

Domani Bistro and Lounge was demolished by an early morning fire that investigators say was due to an electrical malfunction in the restaurant's walk-in freezer. The fire started around 2 a.m. and it took about 60 firefighters two hours to get it under control.

People in the Seminole Heights community describe Domani Bistro and Lounge as an upscale Italian restaurant that has only been open for about two years.

Chili cookout benefits fire victims

Brooksville, Florida -- The Brooksville community came together on Sunday to help the former employees of Papa Joe's Italian Restaurant.

The mom and pop restaurant was destroyed last month in a fire. Their employees, now out of work, were with Papa Joe's for decades.

But the owners are not giving up. They've been holding fundraisers to help them. Today, they held a chili cook off. Earlier this month, a yard sale raised more than $10,000.

The owners tell 10 News they plan to start rebuilding in their same location on Spring Lake Highway in about eight months.

Fatal crash in Hernando County

Hernando County, Florida -- Another fatal pedestrian crash took place Saturday night, this time in Brooksville.

Around 9:45 p.m. on February 15, Paul Patrosky was driving southbound on Sun Road. Burl Batten, was near his mail box on Sun Road and Patrosky did not see hime. Patrosky attempted to avoid hitting Batten but the right front of his car did make contact with Batten.

Batten sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene of the crash.

Man charged with aiming pointer at helicopter

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - A Tampa man is facing a felony charge after authorities say he aimed a laser pointer at a police helicopter.

Tampa police say the crewmembers were on routine patrol near Robles Park early Friday morning when they saw the laser dot on their aircraft three times. The officers spotted the source of the light and watched a man run inside a home.

Child injured when car failed to stop for school bus

Hernando County, Florida -- A child walking to a school bus was hit by a car and transported to the hospital.

Aroudn 8:17 a.m. on SR 50, a school bus was stopped for students with its red lights flashing and stop signs deployed. 6-year-old Janassa Terry was exiting a vehicle to walk to the bus when the car she was leaving was rear-ended by a car that was trying to avoid a collision with the bus. 

Terry was transported to the hospital with minor injuries and the driver who hit her car was ticketed for careless driving. 

Ty Pennington, Sears volunteers help renovate church

Tampa Heights, Florida -- Home improvement guru Ty Pennington is helping to turn a vacant church into a children's community center.

The building on East Palm Avenue in Tampa Heights will serve 200 kids as the Tampa Heights Community and Youth Center where they can learn computer skills, healthy eating habits and other skills.
