WACHULA, Florida- A pair of local 11th graders have been selected to take an all-expense-paid trip to the nation's capital, courtesy of the Peace River Electric Cooperative.

The 11th graders, Shakera Latimore of Bradenton and Savannah Miller of Wauchula were chosen among students across the 10 counties PRECO serves. Both submitted an essay, and were chosen as the top applicants from our area.

Latimore and Miller will join 30 other students from across Florida visiting the capital. Stops are planned at the Capital Building, National Cathedral, Smithsonian Museums, Holocaust Museum and numerous war memorials.

The Youth Tour is held each year to educate high school students about the history and development of rural electrification, promote a better understanding of the value of electric cooperatives, and increase awareness of how the U.S. government works.

Since 2007, Peace River Electric has sponsored 20 local students in the Youth Tour program.
