Governor cuts fire program at SFCC

Sebring, Florida- When Governor Rick Scott signed his $61 billion budget into law last week, one of the biggest losers was higher education.

Among the millions slashed from state colleges and universities was $2.5 million earmarked to create a firefighting education program at South Florida Community College.

College administrators planned to use the money to renovate an existing building on campus with high tech training apparatus for those training to become firefighters.

Brooksville, FL - Students who attend the Star Education Center in Hernando County got a pat on the back yesterday at Kennedy Park in Brooksville. 

The students were celebrating what they know and receiving encouragement after completing the all important FCAT test earlier this week.

The students, whom are overcoming various challenges that take them from the traditional school setting, are continuing their education under the watchful and supportive eye of Star Education faculty and Hernando County School District.

Highlands County, FL -- The Florida Teen Safe Driving Coalition with funding and support from The Allstate Foundation and the National Safety Council (NSC), will stage White Out 2011 from May 2 – 6 to keep more teens safe in the driver and passenger seats.

The Coalition is working with Florida SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) chapters to stage school and community events throughout the state.

Participating schools will host activities and programming to educate teens across the state in the importance of teen safe driving.

Food pantries are running low right now, having exhausted the supply of donations received from food drives during the holidays.

Nature Coast Children’s Crusade is hosting Shark Aid 2011 Charity Festival Concert benefitting United Way of Hernando County’s Community Investment Fund and local food pantries.

Local school looks to make a difference at cancer relay event

Wauchula, FL -- North Wauchula Elementary School is trying to make a difference by teaming up to participate in the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life.

At the event, the school's team will camp out overnight and take turns walking around the track to raise money and awareness to help the American Cancer Society create a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

Saving lives from cancer starts one team, one participant, and one dollar at a time. The school's team is doing their part to make sure that cancer never steals another year of anyone’s life.

Girl fight at school sends one to the hospital

Brooksville, FL -- A girl fight at West Hernando Middle School sends a 13-year-old to the hospital after she tried to break it up.

According to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office, at approximately 8:50 this morning, two 12-year-old girls began to fight in the area of the school bus drop off.

A sister of one of the girls tried to break up the fight. Another 13-year-old girl unrelated to the girls or the fight got into the fight and was knocked to ground hitting her head on the concrete.
