Historian brings Civil War to life through music

Arcadia, FL -- Music historian Bobby Horton will bring the Civil War to life next weekend in Arcadia, presenting "Songs & Stories of the Civil War."


The event put on by South Florida Community College will be held at The Arbor on West Oak Street. 


Dressed in 19th century costume and using period musical instruments, Horton explores the stories of both the North and South through the music they loved.


Each song is placed in context with historical background and portrays the struggles, hopes, and fears of Americans during this long historical conflict.

Tampa, FL -- Hillsborough County Public Schools has canceled all activities tonight due to inclement weather moving in to the area.

That includes all athletic events (indoor and outdoor), evening meetings, trainings, or any other activity at a school or district site.

Charter schools will make decisions about closings individually.

Brandon High students interview author

Brandon, FL -- Students from Brandon High School will get the chance to interview author Darrius Garrett.

Garrett is a member of the Freedom Writers Foundation and will talk to students as part of Literacy Week.

Students have used his book, The Freedom Writers Diary, to model student journaling and fluent reading.

The inverview session takes place on Tuesday, Jan. 25 at 11:30 a.m.

Four Highlands teachers earn national certification

Four Highlands teachers earn national certification

Sebring, Florida --Four new educators in the Highlands County School District have earned National Board Certification this week.

On Tuesday, Rene Blackmon of Avon Elementary, Ashley Culverhouse of Memorial Elementary, Donna Nitz of Lake Country Elementary and Mary Pierce of Hill-Gustat Middle School were all given the honor and celebrated by the school board.

With over 13,000 teachers nationally accredited, Florida registers as the state with the second-highest ranking.

Carrollwood, FL - Hillsborough County School District will offer Regional Financial Aid Nights again this year in all areas of the county.

College bound students and their parents needing information on the Financial Aid Process may attend any one of the listed workshops.

Gaither's Financial Aid Night will be held January 20th. The school is located at 16200 N. Dale Mabry, Tampa.

Seniors who plan on attending college next year should complete a Free Application For Student Aid at www.fafsa.ed.gov .

At the Straz Center recently, students from the Patel Conservatory Youth Theater had the incredible opportunity to chat with cast members from "Wonderland. A new Alice. A New Musical," the show created right here in Tampa that is headed to Broadway.

The first show in the Straz Center's Broadway Genesis Project to make it to Broadway, "Wonderland" has created quite a stir. Straz Center president Judy Lisi is to be congratulated for her leadership and vision!

The theater students in the Patel Conservatory Youth Theater are preparing for their own roles in "The Wiz" March 31, April 1-2 in the TECO Theater at the Straz Center.

Hillsborough County, FL -- The Resources Subcommittee of the Anti-Bullying Advisory Committee will meet Wednesday, January 19, at 2 p.m. in the Sykes Board Room at Crisis Center of Tampa Bay, One Crisis Center Plaza, Tampa.

The Anti-Bullying Advisory Committee was created by the Board of County Commissioners' Resolution Number R09-100.  The purpose of the Committee is to provide advice and  recommendations to curb and eliminate all forms of bullying throughout Hillsborough County.
