Hillsborough magnet, school choice applications due tomorrow

Hillsborough Co., FL – The deadline to submit middle and high school applications for magnet programs and School Choice is Wednesday, January 9.

According to Hillsborough County Schools, Choice Options allows students to apply for a magnet school or another public school with available space within Hillsborough County.  

Students, who wish to remain at their current magnet or choice school, or prefer to attend their attendance area school, do not need to complete an application.

Hernando Co., FL-- Communities In Schools of Hernando County, a local dropout prevention program, is holding a jacket and sweat shirt drive January 8 - January 31, to benefit local students.

New or slightly used items in good condition can be dropped off at Central High School, 14075 Ken Austin Pkwy., Brooksville FL 34613 or Hernando High School, 700 Bell Avenue, Brooksville, FL 34601, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday - Friday.

The Transition to Post-Secondary Committee invites those of you getting ready to brave the next step to attend an important workshop that will make the challenge a bit easier. 

The workshop for students and parents takes place on two separate dates in February.

Hernando Co. increases school law enforcement presence after CT shooting

Hernando Co., FL-- The Hernando County Sheriff's Office announced Monday that the "heartbreaking events that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School" last Friday have inspired them to fine-tune their School Security Operations Plan.

There will now be an increased law enforcement officer presence at both public and private schools in the county.

Sebring, FL-- South Florida State College's Museum of Fine Arts and Culture presents an exhibition based on the Smithsonian traveling exhibition, Journey Stories.

These exhibitions highlights Highlands County residents who moved here from other countries.

Journey Stories: Owen Jolly, features a selection of his paintings in oil, watercolor, and pastel. Jolly, a native from Jamaica, is inspired by everyday people, places, and things.

Sebring High to get cash for support of StateFarm's 'Celebrate my Drive'

Sebring, FL-- StateFarm announced their appreciation of 40 Florida comminty partners last Friday, who supported their "Celebrate My Drive" events back in September of this year. To express their appreciation, they are splitting $120,000 in mini-grants among the 40 partners, and Sebring High School is one of them!

According to their release, they intend to hand over $2,500 to the school as a part of their ongoing safe teen driving initiative.

Hillsborough Public Library to give books to local schools

Hillsborough Co., FL-- The Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library will give new books to some of Hillsborough County’s school children through the Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) program.

Two book distributions are scheduled. The first is on Dec. 13 at Sulphur Springs Elementary School, and the second is on Dec. 14 at James Elementary School. All the books purchased are science related, and targeted for third and fourth graders. The children will be able to keep these books as a part of this book ownership initiative.
