Photo Gallery | P.A.L. announces state-of-the-art gym for Tampa kids


Tampa, Florida-- The Tampa Police Athletic League (P.A.L.) has announced the opening of a brand new gym and civic center for children, made possible by some extremely charitable donations from Susan and John Sykes, Sykes Enterprises Charitable Foundation and other donors. 

According to officials, the new, state-of-the-art recreation center is 25,000 sq ft., and includes a full-size basket/volleyball court, lockers, bleachers, concession stands, outside covered seating, four large classrooms, three specialized classrooms, administrative offices, a conference room, a computer lab, weight and aerobic workout rooms, a huge recreational room and an infirmary

P.A.L., dedicated to providing affordable after school, summer and athletic opportunities to more than 500 Tampa Bay area kids, says the center is designed to promote the physical and mental development of every child.

The break down of donations is as follows: 

  • Susan and John Sykes: $1,400,000
  • Sykes Enterprises Charitable Foundation: $1,000,000
  • Law Enforcement Trust Fund (seized drug money): $1,193,000
  • Community Development Block Grant: $100,000
  • Police Athletic League of Tampa: $400,000

In a release about the new gym, officials describe what it will offer local children:

P.A.L. helps children in a highly structured, academically and recreationally balanced afterschool program. Students are transported from local schools to P.A.L. where they receive a nutritious snack. Students complete their homework with the assistance of highly qualified staff members and individual tutoring is available for students who are struggling with a particular skill or subject.
