TPD: Assessing flooding with High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicles

Tampa, Florida-- Tampa residents may have seen spotted unusual vehicles driving through the flooded areas throughout Tropical Storm Debby's presence. 

According to Tampa Police, the department purchased four High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV), used for assessing floods to reopen streets, and searching for damage and stranded motorists.

Police say each vehicle cost the $1,000, though they are valued at $36,000 each. 

They were manufactured in 1995 and are capable of traveling through three feet of water.

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Operations Center continues to monitor several issues within Hernando County that were brought on by Tropical Storm Debby.

One of the situations they are monitoring closely at this time is the possibility that the Withlacoochee River will reach flood stage due to the heavy rain fall.

Residents who live along the Withlacoochee River are encouraged to monitor the status of the river and evacuate if flooding starts to occur.

Bowling Green, Florida-- On June 24, 2012 at approximately 4 p.m. a tornado touched down on Manuel Road in Bowling Green, Florida.

Hardee County Emergency Management reports that a citizen who called Emergency Management Staff to report the tornado.

They say the homeowners were not home at the time of touch down, and the only damage found was in the barn and a few uprooted orange trees.

Hardee County was under a tornado warning at the time and was to remain under a tornado watch until approximately 11 p.m. tonight.

HCSO: ROAR Summer camp canceled this week

 

Hernando County, Florida-- The Hernando County Sheriff's Office has canceled the ROAR Summer Camp at the Church of the Wildwood for the week of June 25.

According to HCSO, the closure is weather related, and the camp is rescheduled for July 16 at the same location.
